Talks

Bye Bye Banks?

Based on the the book of the same title, this talk looks at how the retail banking business model is being unbundled by technology startups. It groups some of the most interesting companies around the different ways banks make money today, outlines a three stage scenario (how traditional players are being displaced, diminished and disintermediated), why change in large organisations is hard and what the traditional banks can do to compete - launch a new organisation or ‘Beta Bank’. The talk can be evolved to be applicable to other sectors experiencing similar challenges.

Building a Beta Business

Jeff Bezos and Eric Schmidt have presided over some of the fastest growing businesses in history at Amazon and Google respectively. Both follow a very similar philosophy when it comes to strategy - the importance of experimentation at scale. A Beta Business is one that is designed to stand the test of time, one that can adapt at the speed of change happening outside it’s walls. One that can bridge business models and compete with the new era of company - the fast growth tech companies that scale from £0 to £bn value in a matter of a few years. This talk lays down an operating model for a Beta Business with a small number of guiding principles with practical examples and case studies to illustrate them.

Learning from Silicon Valley

Silicon Valley startups demonstrate phenomenal growth, building value into the billions of dollars in ever decreasing timeframes. The scale they achieve is impressive, the lean operating model they demonstrate is even more eye watering. With these startups decimating sectors ranging from telco, through to travel, media and financial services, no industry seems safe. This talk explores some of the trends, techniques and ways of working found in these businesses, with practical examples that can be learnt from and applied in any business.
